Mother Mattie Trust Beck

Sister Mattie Beck will lie in state on Friday, August 28, 2026, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at East Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 29, 2026, at 12:00 Noon at East Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church. Pastor Russell C. Davis will officiate the service.

Sister Mattie Trust Beck, 100, was born June 24, 1926, in Carriere, MS, to the late Viola Burnett Trust and John Trust. She was the second oldest of seven girls and two boys.

At an early age, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior and joined New Hebron Baptist Church, Carriere, MS, under the leadership of Reverend E. H. Hart.

Sister Mattie later moved from Carriere, MS, to Picayune, MS, after the eighth grade. After graduating from high school, she attended Alcorn State University. She returned home to teach in Cybur, MS, for three years, then taught in Bogalusa, LA, for one year.

Sister Mattie united in marriage to the late Reverend Dr. Joe Beck in 1946. After marrying, she decided to continue her education at Xavier University in New Orleans, LA, but plans changed when they became proud parents to their daughter, Thomas Ann Anderson.

Sister Mattie joined East Jerusalem Baptist Church in 1947 under the leadership of Reverend E. L. Hutton. In her 79 years as a faithful and devoted member, she held numerous leadership roles, including Church Clerk, Matron of the Junior Mission, Choir Director, and Kitchen Director. She was very instrumental in introducing Vacation Bible School, where 150-200 children and volunteers attended every summer. She also played a key role in introducing the program to the Springhill Triumph Association District. Her commitment was extended beyond individual positions, as she faithfully served in many areas of the church and within the Springhill Triumph Association District, offering her time, wisdom, and steady leadership wherever needed.

Sister Mattie worked at Polk’s Coffee Shop for about four years and later joined the workforce at First Baptist Church in Picayune, MS, as a food coordinator for twenty years before retiring. She also served as a domestic caregiver for many families in the surrounding area.

Sister Mattie was also known for teaching young women etiquette, including how to properly set a table and serve others. Through these lessons, she instilled values of respect, discipline, hospitality, and pride—principles that extended far beyond the kitchen and everyday life.

Sister Mattie transitioned from her earthly home to her heavenly home on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at her home. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 62 years, Reverend Dr. Joe Beck; daughter, Thomas Ann Anderson; grandchildren, Stefaine Renata Hardaway and Bryant Oniel Hardaway; sisters, Voncile Trust, Johnnie Trust Osbin and Odel Trust Clark; brothers, Allen Trust and Lender Ray Trust; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and in-laws.

Sister Mattie leaves to cherish her precious memory her great-grandchildren, Bryanna Cooper, Michael Stewart (Christy), Whitney Hardaway, Brittney Hardaway Cruthirds (Torey), Keven Sims (Monique) and Jaquarin Durr; sisters, Mollie Trust Jackson, Darnell Trust Jackson and Lizzie Mae Trust; twenty great-great grandchildren; one great-great-great grandchild; and a host of loving and devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, family, friends, church members and community.
